2014 Recap: Full Circle

A recap of 2014. The year was filled with travels to Raleigh, Washington, DC, and we even made a couple of stops to Fort Monroe and Williamsburg near Virginia Beach. In February, we traveled to DC for a conference where we met students from around the East Coast.  It was there we met Kayla, a student at Liberty University who shared that her brother-in-law, Jesse, also lives in Boone, NC and works at Samaritan’s Purse. Kayla connected us to her sister, Kelly, who is a brilliant entrepreneur and runs her own flower business, Philosophy Flowers. She came to a treasure hunt on App’s campus and their family has been a breath of fresh air – encouraging us to pursue our dreams in more ways than one. But more on those dreams later. We conducted numerous treasure hunts this past year and encountered many students who experienced the love of Jesus. Some received Christ’s love for the first time, others were healed, and others were simply encouraged or had someone listen to them. Every encounter is different but each one is powerful in its own way.

Over the summer, we met new friends, Scott and Becky of Meniscus, Inc. Their daughter previously worked at Samaritan’s Purse but now works at Bethel Church in Redding, CA. Scott and Becky connected with us about starting Appalachian School of Ministry and Missions. It was refreshing to see people with a like-heart for ministry. We assisted with Firestarters curriculum, a nine week course that met weekly at Appalachian House of Prayer on Thursdays over the summer. The material was great and we were honored to be a support to their vision.

I can sum up the school of ministry with this: We saw believers who had been hurt and disappointed in their lives experience the pleasure, joy, and good mood of God. The hungry came out of the woodwork. Collectively, I would estimate that there was over 100 who attended Firestarters. Between Scott, Becky, our new friends Ben, his wife Deanne, and her sister Dustene, it was a great ministry team. We had some wild treasure hunts with the school.

On the flip side, this was the first time we ever saw the intimidation of outreach among believers. It’s amazing the stigma that exists in the church to talk to others who are different, believe different, or who are strangers. There is also the notion that if you soak for hours, worship for hours, and pray for hours on end, then you might be ready for a treasure hunt. All I’ve got to say to that is they never saw our nieces in action.

Our nieces paid a visit this summer. Ages 9 and 12 (at the time of their visit), they had no grid for treasure hunts, prophetic evangelism, words of knowledge. One of them couldn’t even quote John 3:16. One night, Keeli prayed with the youngest to receive Jesus and they both were baptized in the Holy Spirit. Two days later, we took them on their first treasure hunt. Contrary to what the formulas we’ve grown accustomed to might say, we didn’t worship and pray for hours. We simply had our 9 and 12 year old nieces, one who was 48 hours old in the Lord and the other who admitted that church was boring. We prayed for about ten minutes, got our clues, and by the end of the night they said, “If this is church, we want to do this every day!” It was like the joy switch was suddenly flipped on after they got some astounding words of knowledge. They knew that they heard God’s voice clearly. That night was a highlight of the year, indeed. But the details are for another blog at a later time.

We were thrilled to have our friend Brennen back in Boone with us after a year in China. Our conversations were bent towards big ideas, big dreams, and our ambitions. One night, he said to me, “Jonathan, I believe within six months you’ll be working in the Boone office of Samaritan’s Purse.” For four years I had been the Church Relations/Social Media Specialist for North American Ministries (more familiarly known as U.S. Disaster Relief) for Samaritan’s Purse located in North Wilkesboro, NC, approximately an hour to and from work each way (or 320 stoplights in a work week). The job was fun and educational, the people were amazing, and the volunteers were truly some of the most selfless people I’ve met. But something in me believed Brennen when he told me that. I was told of a management position available in Donor Ministries. With a lot of prayer and encouragement from Keeli, I applied. Within four months of Brennen’s word, I was the Donor Response Manager, working with a remarkable team, in a wonderful environment, closer to home, and full of new, interesting people that I’m constantly meeting. Disaster Relief will always hold a place in my heart but I am certainly blessed by this move.

Keeli has been on the move as well. She has been preparing a new endeavor – one that I ultimately believe is going to change the world. Everything we’ve done together in ministry, I believe, has been culminating to this moment. We’ve been through a lot for two young people. We’ve seen a lot, experienced a lot, have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly. We’ve seen what works, what doesn’t, and what is a trap that will spin you in a cycle of unsatisfied striving and burnout. Keeli wants to share her insight, wisdom, and practical keys with students who want to see their campus on fire for Jesus. The SPARK Institute is for Students Pursuing A Radical Kingdom. I truly cannot hold back my excitement for what the Holy Spirit is doing!

Here’s to 2015. The best year of our lives thus far.

Brink Fire Recovery

IMG_0312Rich and Linda Brink are good friends.  They are selfless, dedicated, joyful, and loving.  We love Rich and Linda like family.  We met them in Boston in 2011 at the Closer Conference for Ivy League students.  They have shown us continual love, support, and encouragement.  In 2012, Rich visited Boone, NC and ministered at the Fall In Love retreat we hosted and ministered to students and staff at Appalachian State University.  IMG_0275In April 2013, we visited their new home in Harrisburg, PA and experienced their outstanding hospitality.  After living in Maine for 40 years, they moved to Pennsylvania to help launch Global Celebration School of Supernatural Ministry.  It was an act of obedience to the Lord.  Their heart truly is for the kingdom of God. The Brink home received serious damage from a fire that began at the house next to them.  Their third floor is totally destroyed.  Their second floor was also severely affected.  Thankfully, everyone is safe.  Read the official story on ABC27.com and watch the news footage here:abc27 WHTM.

We have never once heard Rich or Linda ask for anything.  We have, however, seen their heart of service and generosity.  Now, it's time to give back.  Click on any of the images in this post to donate and support Rich and Linda in their recovery.  We love them dearly and desire to see them blessed beyond measure.    Please pray and give generously as you feel led.  Thank you.

Crumbs From the Table

"Jonathan! You've got to pray for Phoebe! She can't walk. Can you visit my office to pray for Phoebe?" Obviously, my first question: who is Phoebe? This poor, old woman must be in so much pain, frustration, and depressed. Well, maybe... if Phoebe was a woman. Phoebe just so happened to be this man's dog. This friend runs a local golf business and told me Phoebe would be waiting in his office. I agreed to pray for his pup. He told me he would not be there at the time I was available but to go on in and pray for Phoebe's healing.

I pulled into the parking lot and walked through the door to be greeted by the employees who were also college students. I felt embarrassed by what I was about to say. "I'm here to see Phoebe." Obviously, I was no veterinarian. They pointed the way to my friend's office. Phoebe was there next to the desk. Lying down with a funny contraption (perhaps a dog diaper?) around her two hind legs. I didn't want to close the door but I also didn't want to pray too loud. So I just started petting Phoebe's head and began (silently) speaking affectionately the way many humans do to their dogs.

I prayed over that dog, hoping none of the college students would hear me. I told Phoebe that we have been reconciled back to Father God and back to the garden where mankind had dominion over animals. If we expect to see people healed, we better believe for animals to be healed too.

I stood up and began walking out. Phoebe tagged behind me towards the door. "No Phoebe. You must stay in the office." After my rebuke to this elderly dog, I quickly returned to my car and drove off. Moments later, I received a phone call.

"Jonathan! Phoebe is walking! It worked!" I inquired further to discover that I had totally ignored the fact that this crippled dog was walking. It tried to follow me out the office door and I, in an attempt to spare further embarrassment of being compared to a spiritual dog whisperer, neglected to celebrate a miracle. Sickness and pain is such a disgusting, abominable thing to the Lord that He was even willing to heal the dog. You are not a dog. You are a child of God. How much more will He do for you?

Phoebe lived another year and a half after she was healed. If a dog can experience the tangible healing power of Jesus Christ, shouldn't everyone?

Anniversary

Husband and WifeJuly 31, 2010 was the day Keeli and I were married.  It was a good day.  It was a great day.  But not the best day.  Everything ran smoothly, the ceremony was powerful, the music was perfect, and the bride was beautiful.  Yes, it will be a day that we celebrate.  But a wedding doesn't make a marriage.  The best is not behind us.  The best is today.  And it will be surpassed by tomorrow.  The sacrament of marriage is a necessary glory to step into in order to step up to the next glory.  One of our favorite pastimes is remembering how Jesus rescued us by closing certain doors, promoting us by opening new ones, and directing our steps to see our family equipped to prosper.  When our family advances, the kingdom advances.  Our wedding was one day we will always cherish.  But it will never measure to the lifetime we will spend together, continually falling in love with one another. A celebration of matrimony is like heaven: all the people you love is in one room together, sharing in the joyous occasion.  But we have made many great friends since our wedding day.  We wish there was a way they could have been there to celebrate our union with us.  So I created this... Enjoy.

Jesus Hijacked Your Facebook

Social media has dominated the world with a slew of opinions, bias, and commentary.  With over one billion people and counting, Facebook has been a medium where news spreads.  So I figure, why not good news? Doug Addison is a prophet who goes far beyond the borders of subtle to show a party hard world how much Jesus loves them.  He is well known for dream interpretation, tattoo prophecies, and stand up comedy.  If you deal with religion, you are probably navigating your mouse's cursor to the "X" in the top-right corner of your screen about right now.  Go ahead and click.  God loves you and goodbye.

Okay, now that we can enjoy our time together without the stifling presence of religion, let's continue with a testimony of God's power on social media!

Doug Addison gives prophetic words through his Twitter account everyday @dougtaddison.  To some, the prophetic words may feel very general.  Not every word applies to every person.  Often, Keeli and I have one of two scenarios play out: the word Doug delivers is for us as an encouragement for current situations or it confirms what God has already spoken to us.

Doug's daily prophetic word of the day for May 14 was: Use your spiritual gifts today outside of your comfort zone and you will see an amazing result.

I had never released a word of knowledge on my personal Facebook page, so I thought I would give it a try.  I immediately felt a sensation in my lower-left side of my back.  My first thought was "kidney stones".  Mere seconds later, I saw "Kidney Stones Healed" posted by The Greater News on my newsfeed.  Confirmation is a beautiful thing.  I posted the following status on my wall.  The testimony is the comment that follows:

Hookah and Slackline

Two days prior to writing this blog, Something More School of Ministry went on a treasure hunt.  As we walked the campus, we stumbled upon a group of five guys taking turns smoking hookah and walking a slackline (think of a tightrope tied between two trees that hangs three feet off the ground).  Leanne, one of the SMSOM students approached these guys asking about their slackline and hookah.  After introducing herself, she related to them like a mother, striking up a conversation, asking about their majors, where they were from, and their interests. They asked Leanne if she wanted to walk the slackline.  I began encouraging her to give it a try.  Keeli (who must have been preoccupied with Anneli) did not hear them ask Leanne if she wanted to walk the slackline and, instead, thought they offered her to smoke hookah.  This gave Keeli reason to believed I was encouraging Leanne to smoke up!  I couldn’t figure out what the big deal was.  It was a total Three’s Company scenario – a complete misunderstanding and gap in communication that left us laughing when we finally got on the same page.

Leanne began telling the group of guys about the love of God and how He had an amazing plan for each of them.  With all eyes fixed on Leanne, they listened intently.  One guy spoke up and thanked us for not shouting at them and calling them pagans like the hellfire preacher does when he comes on campus.  Leanne’s response was inspired by the Holy Spirit:

“We just need to pray that he [the hellfire preacher] experiences the love of God too.”

Leanne’s words left everyone stunned.  They began nodding in agreement.  The young men started to see how limitless the Father’s love was for all people – even those who have a tendency to do us wrong – and how compassion doesn’t cut down someone many would consider a confused, misled enemy in disagreement.

Leanne asked if she could pray for them.  She and I sat in the circle around the hookah as she began to pray the most encouraging prayer for their futures, their spouses and families, and gave thanks for the great plans that Jesus has for them.  They lifted their heads and began thanking Leanne.  One of the guys hugged Leanne and asked if he could be sent one of the photos (below) to show his mother.  These students were blessed by the encounter but it blessed us to see the Holy Spirit pour out love and grace through Leanne.

As we left, Leanne said, “I’m excited for their future because God is excited for their future.”

Transformation

Written by Ann Tobler, a friend we had the honor of meeting at a Holy Spirit Party in Raleigh, NC.  After encountering the love of Jesus, Ann was instrumental in bringing transformation to her high school and community through the power of the Holy Spirit. We track our lives by days, months, and years. We celebrate birthdays, take pride in our anniversaries, and mark our calendars anticipating the exciting events that have yet to come. Most of our lives are marked by dates that can’t be remembered. We have our normal routines, our day to day jobs, our families, and everything in between. But then there are days that change our lives. In my opinion, there are typically two types of life changing days. The days that we rejoice in remembering and days that are attached to events of sorrow or pain. I know, in my life, there are several dates that hold life-changing significance and I want to tell you about two of them.

December 9, 2005 was a date that nearly stopped me dead in my tracks and I mean that literally. As a new Christian, a group of friends and I decided to prayer walk our school campus. At the end of our meeting, a friend and I hopped onto the back of a car to sit and talk. Then it happened. The car accelerated and turned and I was tossed from the back of the car to the asphalt. I skidded 15 long feet on my back and slammed my head into the ground. It was a life changing day. I fractured my skull and broke the bones in my ears. I laid on the asphalt unconscious, waiting for the ambulance, unaware of the extent of the damage. The days, weeks, and months which turned into a year and a half were filled with relearning how to conquer the brain damage, memory loss and the horribly frustrating new trait of being the partially deaf girl. Fast forward through the anger and frustration and rebellion against a God who would “let this” happen to me. On top of everything else, when I felt like God was failing me, science was too. I had re-corrective surgery on my ear to restore hearing and was intensely disappointed when the results were far from "healed and whole".

Then there was May 19, 2007 – this was the day that my life was drastically altered by the love of God and the power of the Holy Spirit. After a night at a local music venue, meeting the members of a band from Boone, NC, I found myself sitting on a couch in a living room surrounded by a group of faces that were mostly introduced the night before.

I quietly sat and began to listen to two “crazy about Jesus” people and was honestly turned off and frustrated that I even came. Keeli opened with, “Tonight we are going to learn about the Holy Spirit and healing.” What and WHAT? I had never heard of the power of the Holy Spirit and I definitely knew nothing about healing. Then another life defining moment happens. I heard the voice of God in the deepest parts of my inner being for the first time. It was strong, clear and oh so life changing. “Open your eyes and look at where you’re at.” In awe of what was happening I quieted my mind and really began to listen to what Keeli and Jonathan were saying. When they asked a very simple question, “Does anyone need to receive healing,” I reasoned with myself before raising my hand and telling my story. In my head it went a little like this, “This is insane. Healing? I mean if it works, great, if it doesn’t then I have nothing to lose. It’s not like they’re practicing witchcraft on me.” So I raised my hand and explained about how, literally 2 days prior, I received the news that my surgery to correct my hearing was not successful. I even had internal pictures of my ear to prove it. I then was scheduled to return for a follow up appointment 5 days later to schedule another surgery in hopes of succeeding a second time. I saw Jonathan and Keeli’s faces light up with the excitement of their complete faith that I would be healed.

Over the next hour or so, I watched arms grow out, spines straightened, terminal headaches relieved and then there was me. I sat in the “hot seat” and experienced the most intense and overwhelming power of prayer. To be completely honest, I can’t even remember if I cried or not but this warm blanket of God’s love and the power of the Holy Spirit was released in my life. I was spiritually on fire and captivated by what I was experiencing. As my turn in the “hot seat” came and went,  I began praying for someone else and within moments I realized that I was baptized in the Spirit and began speaking in tongues. It was undeniable that God was moving in a powerful way that night. Having experienced God in a miraculous way on May 19, 2007, I can honestly say my life has never been the same. When I went for my follow up appointment, the doctors jokingly said I must have experienced a miracle and that I wouldn’t need a second surgery. I was healed. You never realize when you wake up on just another normal day, that it could just happen to be a life changing day.

Pigeon Toed

Is there something that you have dealt with your entire life?  Is it hard for you to believe for your own healing?  Jesus asked people, “Do you want to be well?” The answer seems obvious but many identify with their own oppression, handicap, or sickness.  Whether you were born this way or recently diagnosed, God wants you well! I was a normal kid growing up.  I played sports as a youth and thought I was going to the Major Leagues or NBA.  However, I wasn’t that good.  I was tall for my class but I lacked the speed necessary to be of any significant value to a team.  My major setback: I was born pigeon toed.

I didn’t think much of it except when I tripped over my own two feet.  When I did, it was embarrassing, especially when another classmate pointed out that I “walked funny”.  So I just ignored it and lived to deal with it.  I wore insoles for my shoes that helped “correct” my walk.  I certainly didn't lose sleep over it.

I was raised in a home unaware of the availability of Jesus’ healing power to move in and through believers.  We went to church but it was pretty boring compared to what I see and experience now.  I never saw miracles, healing, signs or wonders.  I never heard a prophetic word or someone speak in tongues until I was a junior in high school.  Being saved was all there was.  Heaven was something we waited for, never something we bring to earth.  God's will was more of a guessing game rather than being realized through a relationship with Him.  Being raised in a church like this, I never had anyone in my life that was baptized and anointed with the Holy Spirit to pray for healing.  I, being ignorant of the power for God to heal today, never sought this kind of help from a believer.

When I finally learned what was available through the finished work of the cross (beyond the forgiveness of sin), I felt robbed.  I felt robbed that I had no teaching growing up about the baptism of the Holy Spirit.  I was clueless.  It wasn’t my parents’ fault.  They were clueless too.  Nobody had ever taught them either.  When I was baptized in the Holy Spirit, a passion was stirred to make sure others who wanted everything God had for them were not robbed any longer like I was.  Ever since, the power of the Holy Spirit has wrecked me.  Now, I want it to wreck my generation, the next generation, and every generation to follow.  Our influence isn’t limited to our generation.  Our mission is to affect nations and generations.

By this time, I have seen many people healed.  But I never received healing for my pigeon toed self.  One morning, at Destiny Church in Spruce Pine, NC, my friend Aaron was healed of the opposite problem I had.  Rather than having feet that turned in, his feet turned out.  Our friend Richard spoke a healing word over Aaron and his feet began to straighten out.  Later that night at Immersion on Appalachian State’s campus, I heard the testimony.  If it happened to Aaron, I wanted healing too!  God is not a God of favorites – He loves us all equally!

I asked Richard to speak a healing word over me and I began to feel my feet turn out with sensations moving all the way up to my knees.  I stood up, moved around, began to walk, and my walk turned into a run as I thanked Jesus while getting used to my “new feet”.

The Lord wants your lost years restored.  He wants you stirred to believe for your own miracle, healing, and breakthrough.  Don’t be robbed another second.  Receive the fullness of His love now!

Jesus the Matchmaker

Springtime means one thing for many couples… It's time to plan a wedding.  What happens if all the details don't fall into place?  What if the pieces don't fall into place where you want them to?  Maybe Plan B was God's original intention.  I want to share with you how God works all things together for good. One of my best friends (also named Jonathan) was getting married to his fiancée, Nikki. Jonathan was a roommate in college.  I wish I kept a book of quotes because every word out of his mouth has the power to drive away boredom and the blues.  I've never laughed so hard as I did with Jonathan.  We continually discover that Nikki is a great catch for Jonathan.  She is well rounded, very talented, and can do almost anything.  It's wonderful when you can celebrate the spouse your friend marries.

Jonathan had asked me to be a groomsman in his wedding.  I was honored but, unfortunately, I had to decline.  Our friends had been planning a conference for many months that we had committed to.  It was scheduled right in the middle of the wedding.  I was conflicted and didn't want to hurt my friend.

Months passed and the conference was cancelled.  Thankfully, we were able to attend the wedding but I was not going to be a groomsman.  Jonathan had found a replacement but I was happy to be able to celebrate with them as they were wed.

Over a year after Jonathan and Nikki had been married, we met up with them.  They were telling us about their two friends who were getting married.  One was a bridesmaid in their wedding.  The other was a groomsman…The same groomsman who filled my space!  They met at the wedding, fell in love, and tied the knot a few months later!

Had I been a groomsman, they may have never met.  For months, I had felt bad for declining the invitation to be in the wedding party.  That is, until I found how Jesus turned it around for the benefit of a man who met his wife.  Sometimes, Plan B was actually Plan A all along.

If you're planning a wedding, my encouragement to you: Don't sweat the details. Don't lose sleep. Press in and pray.  God works all things together for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). That means you!

Fun

It was the beginning of a new semester and every campus ministry is going all out to make sure students get plugged in.  Since meeting rooms on campus couldn’t be scheduled until classes began, Immersion Church needed a meeting space that was close to campus.  Our friend, a local television personality, offered his television studio for the first couple of Sundays.  This was a huge blessing – one we will never forget. Our friend unlocked the studio for us early one Sunday morning.  As we were setting up the sound equipment, he began to tell me that he hurt his leg in a skateboarding accident.  When I first met our friend, he was showing me photos of himself skateboarding.  In person, he always looked very professional.  In the photos, he was wearing a helmet, shorts and knee pads.  It didn’t seem feasible and I wasn’t sure if he was pulling my leg.  It wasn’t until later, I saw a video featuring him skateboarding.  Mind blown.  Now, his leg was injured and he expressed his fear that he may never be able to skateboard again.

I asked if I could pray for his leg to be healed.  We prayed and continued setting up the sound equipment.  This meeting, along with the others held in the studio, were phenomenal.  Our friend Staci ministered one Sunday and, at the end of another, a student was born again and baptized in the Holy Spirit.

The following week, he unlocked the studio and began telling me that he skateboarded that week and pulled some big tricks. “It’s really kind of a miracle,” I remember him saying.  His leg was healed!  Sometimes, we can blame the pain on our fun.  But Jesus wants us to have fun and do things we enjoy.  We don’t have to earn the healing, strive for the healing, or beg and plead.  There’s so much more we want to do to pay our friend back for his kindness in helping us launch another year of ministry at Appalachian State.  I believe one day we will.  Generosity like he had shown us is rare and made a lasting impression.  Had he not opened his studio for our use, I may not have had the chance to pray for his leg and maybe skateboarding would have become a thing of the past – nothing more than a fond memory.  But God…

Turn-or-Burn Birthday

It was a beautiful autumn day and happened to be my 23rd birthday.  What better way to start the day than going onto campus, shouting at students, picketing, and telling them they are all going to hell?  Well, that wasn’t how I started my birthday.  However, there was a group of turn-or-burn preachers occupying Sanford Mall outside of the Student Union.  Each time they come to ASU, they make a scene, start fights, stir dissension, and exchange heated words with students.  There was an absence of love, joy, and peace in their message and salvation was determined by good behavior rather than our righteousness being obtained by the finished work of Jesus on the cross.  While many believe it is their holy duty to change the minds of these hellfire and brimstone preachers, my friends and I decided to take another approach. Rarely will you ever change someone’s mind.  I like to let Jesus do that Himself.  How?  His goodness draws men to repentance.  His power yields fruit bearing witness of His goodness.  We leveraged the message these men were presenting as conversation starters with students.  We also didn’t “steal” from their audience.  Those who were engaged in the heated exchange were hot-tempered and looking for a fight.  Those outside of the ring were more approachable.  The Lord told me he had given us the angel of Victory as we went out.  Here’s what happened:

A couple of ladies on Appalachian State's female rugby team were passing out leaflets, advertising an event or game they were having.  One of them had a brace on their wrist.  My friend, Aaron, asked what happened to her wrist.  It had been sprained.  Aaron lightly touched it and simply said, “Wrist, be healed in Jesus’ name,” and removed his hand.  Almost immediately, she took the brace off and began turning her wrist to and fro.  Without us asking, her teammate confirmed that her wrist was unable to do that.  Just as a camera was being mounted on a tripod to capture footage of the preachers, Aaron grabbed the attention of the cameraman and told him that the real Jesus was doing miracles.  He glanced at us and the rugby players without saying a word and turned back around to complete the task he had started.

(If local or mainstream media don’t pick up on the stories, it could be, like this cameraman, they do not want to.  That’s why I encourage you to capture the healing on your phone or camera.  Document what The Lord is doing and give the world some good news!)

We later approached a student who broke his toe on a slack line (imagine a tightrope a few feet off the ground, tied between two trees).  This young man was not a believer.  We told him about the miracles we saw earlier that day and he let us pray for him.  His broken toe improved drastically and he was very shocked.  It may be hard to comprehend why some don’t receive all of Jesus right there on the spot, but sometimes we plant seeds and let the Holy Spirit take over.

Our other friend, Brennen, along with Aaron, saw someone on crutches and shot towards her to ask how they could pray.  This student was a runner and had ongoing issues with her knee.  They prayed for her and she hobbled off on the crutches.  Some would pose the question: Why didn’t God heal her?  The next time Brennen saw her, she was off the crutches and told him that there had been no pain since the day he and Aaron prayed for her.  Even if we didn’t see her throw her crutches down and cut cartwheels immediately, the truth remains: Jesus healed her!

The day ended with some mysterious aviator sunglasses (A birthday gift from Jesus?) lying on the top of my car, followed by a surprise party and a delicious cookie cake created by my amazing girlfriend at the time (Her name is Keeli... Maybe you’ve heard of her!).  The cake represented a revelation I had at the time: God’s love and power is like a train on its tracks.  Love is the way but without God's power you don't have a vehicle to get you there.  The power of God working through us is only effective through love.  I’ll never forget that birthday.

Heart for Harvard - Part 2

I returned to Boone, NC from the Yale Institute with a fire burning on the inside of me that had been ignited by others with a similar passion for revival on college campuses.  At the Institute, I had met the President of Campus Renewal Ministries, Jeremy Story.  It was because of his message that my dreams were awakened.  I heard him share testimonies of what he had seen at the University of Texas and I wanted to see those same things at ASU.  When I heard him minister, it felt like my heart was going to explode with love and compassion for the college campuses.  In that moment, I knew my specific calling.  After hearing Jeremy, my passion to reach the nations through the universities and colleges became my purpose in life.  My life has never been the same since the first time I heard him speak. I was also captivated by the story of Gipsy Smith.  For the next several months I spent three to five hours everyday worshiping Jesus in my bathroom.  Why the bathroom?  Because Smith drew a circle around himself with chalk and asked God to fill the circle with revival and, in my apartment, the bathroom was the smallest room.  I asked God to fill that area with revival so it would pour out onto the entire campus and into the nations.  Worship music would play from the speakers I placed in the bathroom as I read my Bible and spent time with Jesus in the bathroom.  In those moments, I became confident in knowing that what God had spoken would come into being.

These are some of the words Jesus spoke to me in the summer of 2006:

“The Mountain Mission Movement coming out of Appalachian State University is greater than the Student Volunteer Mission Movement of the 1800s.”

“Appalachian State will be known on the map for their football.  It will be a gateway for media coverage as my Spirit expands on the campus.” (ASU beat Michigan in 2007 and were back to back to back national champions).

On October 25th, 2006, I met the man of my dreams at a prayer meeting I hosted in ASU’s Student Union.  After that meeting, several of us went out to eat at Dos Amigos.  That night at dinner my dad discovered Jonathan’s heart to host a meeting on campus to teach students on the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.  My dad encouraged Jonathan to meet up with me to plan the gathering, which we later called Presence: Out of Apathy…Into Power.  Jonathan and I began meeting the next week in the Student Union to plan Presence.  We would read over and add to the blue notebook Jonathan had written his dreams, ideas, and goals in.  It took several months of rejection until we finally had a time and place approved for the meeting: March 27, 2007.  In the meantime, we began Holy Spirit Parties that we intended to lead for only 3 weeks.  However, they continue to this day.

In the midst of continuing to plan Presence and hosting Holy Spirit Parties, we met several other friends who had the same heart for prayer and revival.  We truly lived a lifestyle of prayer and fasting.  Every week, I fasted with no food and only liquids from Sunday to Wednesday evening and again all day Thursday until after the Holy Spirit Party.  From that semester to now, we have seen thousands come to know Jesus and receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.  Many miracles, including physical and emotional healing have also taken place.

We continue to share what Jesus is doing at ASU because testimonies spread the goodness of Jesus!  An individual prayer for revival at Harvard expanded into a vision for the nations and generations to know Jesus.  What may seem like small beginnings are such sweet memories that set you up to change the nations!

Indulge in how good God is!

Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.      -Psalm 34:8

Heart for Harvard - Part 1

As a junior in college, I found myself praying for revival in the Ivy League schools.  I spent a night immersed in the presence of God, full of hope, that God’s presence would be known on Harvard’s campus.  After praying I began to think about how “strange” it was for me to have a heart for Harvard when I did not attend an Ivy League school. The next morning, I decided to research the connection between revival and the Ivy League campuses.  When I sat down to the computer, I searched Google for “Ivy League Revival”.  The very first link that came up took me directly to the registration page for the Yale Institute of Campus Revival and Awakening.  Although the website for the institute clearly explained that they were looking for campus ministers and professors with a heart for the universities, I knew God had ordered my steps and that I was to attend this gathering.  I completed my registration not knowing what the person on the other end was going to think when they saw I was a college student.  After applying, I told God that I expected for him to cover all of my finances to attend what I had just applied for.

A few days later, I received a phone call from an unknown number.  It was Dave Warn from Collegiate Impact who was planning and hosting the institute.  Dave shared how they appreciated my interest, but at that time they were not accepting college students.  If they changed their mind they would let me know.  After the conversation ended, I told God that I knew I was supposed to be there and I would go ahead and raise the financial support to go.  I wrote a letter and began sending it out to friends, explaining what the Lord had placed on my heart.

About a month before the institute began, I received my second phone call from Dave.  He let me know that they had decided to let me come if I could get my finances together in such a short period of time.  Little did he know at that time that I was already working on the money!  I told him the money wouldn’t be a problem.

A man from church offered to buy my plane ticket and I continued making plans to be somewhere that would reveal my heart’s desires.  It was amazing to see how God took care of every little detail including my two professors who allowed me to miss the last full week of summer school.

On my way to Yale, I had a layover in Hartford, CT and changed to a much smaller plane for the last flight into New Haven.  When I boarded the plane, a man in front of me named Gary Stratton asked if I was going to the institute and I told him I was!  He explained that when we were waiting at the terminal God spoke to him and told him there were specific young people God was raising up to lead His next move and when he closed his laptop to board the plane he saw me and God said, “She is one of them.”

That week, Gary was my dad away from home!  I have had the privilege of meeting part of his beautiful family and they are such a blessing!  I was in awe of how God not only takes care of our finances but also provides family and relationships everywhere we go with God!

Through that week I heard so many incredible ministers.  I met men of God who have had hundreds of angelic visitations in their home and took their time to pour into me that week.  There are men and women of God who have radically laid their lives down to see the fullness of God’s heart known to all men and nations.

On the last night of the institute, the President of Life Action Ministries, Byron Paulus, spoke after our dinner.  He shared the story of a man named Gipsy Smith who would take a piece of chalk and draw a circle around himself.  Smith would ask God to fill that circle with revival.  He knew if he was overflowing with God the presence of Jesus would pour out of him everywhere he went.  Revival begins with you!

That was a life changing message in my life!  From that night my heart has been to be so full of Jesus that I leak Him everywhere I go.  I want to radically love Jesus in such a way that every person I come in contact with knows Him.  Although I am blessed with an incredible family and friends, it was my passion from that night forward to know that my destiny, provision and happiness depended on God alone.  I knew that, even if it was just me and Jesus, we would see transformation together in the entire world.

Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. -Psalm 2:8

Jesus vs Virus

Unbeatable.  Incurable.  Fatal.  Untouchable.  Rejection.  These may be a few words that come to mind when you hear the word that has infected millions around the world: AIDS.  Many around the world have contracted this deadly virus and, in return, have been shunned by their communities as they await their inevitable, lonesome defeat, laid waste in rejection and decay.  As believers, we were mandated to turn these scenarios around. A friend, Joshua, and his father took a mission trip to Kenya in 2012.  While there, his father, full of the Holy Spirit, had the opportunity to pray for someone with AIDS.  A couple of days passed and the person returned, having since been tested for the virus, declared the good news that they had been healed.  AIDS died at the name of Jesus Christ.

Upon hearing this testimony, it reminded me of an account that I had the honor of playing a role in.  How?  By praying.

The details were a little fuzzy so I asked my friend, Kelly, for a recap.  Her family had the connection with the girl described in the following testimony.  Kelly writes:

The little girl in Brazil (Carol) was sold by her grandmother as a sex slave when she was 3 or 4 years old. I don't know when, but somehow she got herself to the orphanage where my father visited in 2007 - She was 12 years old then. As a result of her years as a sex slave, she suffered from digestive problems. I'm not sure when or how many times, but at least once (I could have sworn it was twice) she was tested positive for AIDS and because of this, the doctors in Brazil could not provide her with surgery she needed. We prayed and she was given another test for AIDS which came out negative. She then got the surgery she needed as all seemed well.

Please continue to send Carol (and the other children) your long distance prayers.

I want to focus on two words in her description: We prayed.

This was a girl I've never met in a country I have not yet visited.  The only background I had on the situation came from Kelly.  I don't know how many people were praying for Carol, but we declared that she was healed by the stripes of Jesus.  I remember receiving the news that there was no sign of AIDS in her body.  Sometimes, as believers, we tend to deduce the power of God to our proximity to the situation.  His love isn't just released when you lay hands on someone or see them face to face.  The five fold ministry (Ephesians 4:11-12) does not include intercessors.  Why?  Because we are all called to be intercessors!

Be encouraged and know that your prayers, intercession, and declarations over peoples, cities, and nations are powerful and effective because you are the righteousness of God in Jesus Christ.

Presence

October 25, 2006 is an important date.  That was the day Keeli and I first met.  She invited me to a prayer meeting being held in the Student Union on Appalachian State's campus the next night.  It was that night I saw passion in students I never saw up until that time.  The big shocker was that students were praying in tongues.  Being baptized in the Holy Spirit as a junior in high school, I had never been around a group of students this large that were desperate to see transformation on their campus.  After the prayer meeting, we went to a restaurant called Dos Amigos.  Ironically enough, a friendship was formed between two people. Sitting at the dinner table, I shared with Keeli's father, Kermit, about my vision to host a conference on campus telling others about the baptism of the Holy Spirit.  Why?  Because I had been raised in a Christian home, went to church all of my life, surrounded myself with friends that love Jesus, but never even heard of the baptism of the Holy Spirit until my junior year of high school.  How many others were out there like me?  How many have been robbed of receiving the greatest gift a believer could receive because they never heard of it (like the believers in Acts 19:1-7)?

When I shared my vision with Kermit, he announced it to the entire table.  I remember making eye contact with Keeli.  We didn't wink at each other or make eyes at one another, but I remember noticing that this had her attention.  Kermit encouraged me to meet with her to plan this out and see it through.  It also helped that everyone else at the table was counting on action being taken.  Accountability at its finest.

From October to March, we planned, prepped, fasted, prayed, and advertised.  We called the conference "Presence: Out of Apathy... Into Power".  It was a different time.  Back then, everyone pitched in.  Their efforts to ensure this conference was a success has not been overlooked or forgotten.  Everyone did their part, from the worship team and video/sound crew to the prayer group from Asheville and graphic designer who created the posters and fliers students distributed.  It was the Body of Christ in its purest form.

200 were in attendance, including students from twelve different campus ministries.  That night, eight students were baptized in the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues for the first time.  The eight that received the baptism of the Holy Spirit were significant, but what happened afterwards was beautiful.  Hundreds of people have since been baptized in the Holy Spirit.  Not just at conferences or church meetings, but in everyday life.  If we went to lunch with someone, we would lead them in the baptism of the Holy Spirit.  If we carpooled with someone or gave them a ride, they were baptized in the Holy Spirit.  If we hung out in dorms or apartments, people would get baptized in the Holy Spirit.

Never deduce what is meant for everyday life to a church meeting.  Don't always expect a preacher, pastor or Bible study leader to do it for you.  You have influence.  When you live a life of testimonies that point to Jesus, you can easily have people's attention, stir their hunger, and lead them to receive the Lord, the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and do so simplistically.  The Spirit of God is not on break during your life outside of a church meeting.  He is alive, ready for others - everybody - to be baptized in the Holy Spirit.  As I like to say, being baptized in the Holy Spirit has nothing to do with your salvation, but it could have everything to do with someone else's.  This baptism makes heaven tangible on earth for you and those around you.  This baptism empowers you, the believer, to do the works that Jesus did and greater.

Simple

The moment every believer waits for. If we screw up, we could blow it for all eternity… for the other person. That’s right. I’m talking about the pressure many endure. I'm talking about sharing your faith. Let me give you a scenario that plays through the mind of many Christians who have ever contemplated sharing their faith with others:

First, it begins with learning someone is not a follower of Jesus. When in their presence, it’s like walking on eggshells to be the best clean-joking Christian they’ve ever met. It is not expedient to share with them just yet because we are building the relationship, even if they aren’t that enjoyable to be around. It becomes exhausting and drains the life out of you. Then, the opportunity knocks. It’s time to rise to the occasion and fulfill our call to duty. But instead of simply sharing, the conversation turns to convincing, most likely with hours upon hours of discussion, debate, disagreement, and busting out the greatest apologetic hits. Flex your knowledge, admire the size of your brain, and stand in awe of the knowledge you retained from your preacher. After a heated debate about sin, Pygmies, and smoking, a cell phone call interrupts and time has been spent.

If you’re “successful” then you made it through without losing a friend or burning a bridge. If you’re really good, then you spoke the entire time with their full attention, ending with you leading them in a prayer to receive Christ. Worst case scenario, you may have destroyed any possibility of future (awkward) discussion but feel like a real soldier for Christ because you “planted seeds.” In all of the talking, topics like the power of the Holy Spirit, signs, wonders, healing and miracles do not make their debut for fear it may "weird them out" to hear about the supernatural power of God. Perfect love casts out all fear. If we do this out of religious obligation and not because of love we're missing the mark. Love is fearless.

When we anticipate an event like this, we think about every possible turn it could take, and imagine every ill-occurrence that is possible.

Let me give you another scenario. This one is true.

At a former summer job on campus, I became friends with one of my coworkers. We shared common ground with music, had similar taste in bands, and recorded a few songs. We always had fun, laughed a lot, and jammed when the opportunity presented itself. Keywords: friends and fun. Often, we try to force ourselves into situations with people who we can’t stand to be around. This was not the case.

One night, we were hanging out with some other coworkers. It was the weekend and I was the only sober person in the group. The topic of God was brought up (That tends to happen when people drink). I didn’t bring up God. They did. In their denial, I simply claimed that I had seen the supernatural power of Jesus heal the sick and I had witnessed His Spirit perform signs, wonders, and miracles because of His love and the finished work of the cross. The night ended, the friendship continued and we finished our summer with eight coworkers receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit. My friend, however, was not counted among them. No hard feelings. No dispute. No hours of long discussion.

Towards the end of the Spring semester, I received a call from my friend. He wanted to grab lunch. I met him in the Student Union. He began by apologizing to me. He continued to explain that he gave up drinking for Lent (Coming from someone who never gave up anything for Lent, it was funny how unbelievers can still be religious). In his forty days of sobriety, he began to like himself more and more. He began reading the Bible and began praying. He received salvation in Jesus and the Holy Ghost took up residence in him!

Now, my friend knows Jesus. Without a heated debate, a long discussion, and without bringing out the big guns of apologetics. I didn’t even pray with him to receive Christ. The goodness of God draws men to repentance. I am not the Holy Spirit. I only stood by Jesus because He has shown me His power. This is why testimonies are important. The lines are being drawn. The real Jesus is being revealed through the power of His Spirit working through His bride while the masquerade of religion, its performance, and grueling boredom is being exposed.

I don’t have to convince people that I’m right or that they’re wrong. That is the beauty of sharing the Gospel. When the Gospel is truly preached, signs and wonders follow. Jesus confirms His Word with signs following (Mark 16:15-20). It’s only in through the power of the Spirit, through signs and wonders that we as believers can fully proclaim the Gospel (Romans 15:18-19). The Gospel is the Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power (I Corinthians 4:20). Talk is cheap. Power was purchased at the cross and its reward is awaiting all who will receive.

Be encouraged and love a friend to Jesus.

Perfect Conditions

The conditions we put on our love towards people is founded on their appearance and their actions.  I tend to think Jesus always set a better example.  He examined the heart.  If people were inevitably bound to their demons with no hope of redemption then how could any of us be eligible for a Savior?  The “unsaved” are never “unsavable”. Neither Keeli nor I have ever had a beer.  (Beer battered fish, however, is another story… So good!) You could say that we live in a dry home.  It is a personal choice to not drink.  We don’t judge others if they do or think that we are higher than others because we don’t.  We have chosen not to play with other people’s fire.  Some lack control.  Some get consumed.  Some hurt themselves or others.  One man named Carl knew the monster of alcoholism.  But one night, he had an encounter with the fire of God.

I played guitar for a band during my college years with my friends, Ben, Matthew and Colby (all very talented musicians).  We were in downtown Asheville.  We strolled away from the coffee shop and made our way to my vehicle.  For some reason, we stopped to pray for each other.  Before we know it, a man comes stumbling towards us.

“I love Jesus,” he said.  This man was clearly drunk.  He started begging for money and told us he didn’t have a vehicle.  Two sentences later he pointed to a van claiming that it was his.  So let’s assess the situation.  A lying, begging, homeless drunk is raving about Jesus.  Sometimes, believers who distance themselves from certain things can have a tendency to also distance themselves from the people who are consumed by those things.  When that occurs, opportunities are missed!  On this night, conditions were perfect for God to move!

We asked Carl if we could pray with him.  He accepted.  We asked him what we could pray for.  He stretched out his hands and said he had arthritis.  It literally looked like golf balls were tucked under his skin around the middle knuckle on each hand.  Ben grabbed his hand and I placed my hand on top of Carl’s.  Ben prayed.  When we looked at his hands, the “golf balls” shrunk tremendously!  He began moving his hands like he couldn’t before.  One miracle happened.  Why not another?

I asked him if he had back pain.  He did.  He sat down on a curb and stretched out his legs.  One leg was about an inch shorter than the other.  We commanded his leg to grow in the name of Jesus and it shot out perfectly even with his other.

We gave him some cash and thanked him for letting us pray with him.  You never know who you’ll encounter or if you will ever see or hear from them again.  That’s why it’s important to reveal the love of God to all we encounter.  When certain people seem unlovable, let God’s grace and love take the lead.

Jesus Loves Babies

When I was a student at ASU, a friend of a friend made an appearance all the way from New Jersey to initiate a pro-life group on campus to stand for the rights of the unborn.  She was bold and passionate about the issue and the people involved.  Her conviction was driven by love for the women who had abortions, the babies who had been aborted, and the unborn children whose lives hung in the balance of a decision. Years later, she was married, moved to Arizona, and had her first child, Karen Ann.

When Karen Ann was 14 months old, she was just diagnosed with cerebral palsy.  There was something wrong with her gross motor skills.  She had the ability of about an eight month old.  Although it was hard for her, she was mentally ready to do so much more than she was physically capable of.  She couldn’t seem to get her legs to function correctly.  It was difficult for her to put weight on them.  At this stage, she was getting around by army crawling.

Little did we know, Karen Ann’s mother had been reading the testimonies posted on this blog.  She asked if we would pray for her daughter.  We shared the testimony of a friend who was healed of cerebral palsy to stir faith for her daughter’s healing.  Then, we emailed a prayer of healing and restoration for her to read every day over her daughter.

Two months passed and we heard the report:

Hey Jonathan and Keeli, I wanted you both to know that Karen has been in physical therapy for two months now and has improved so drastically we're all amazed. She's 16 months old and crawling now really well! Her balance is better and she's pulling herself up on furniture, and walking while holding on to chairs and couches. Thank you for your prayers! A few months ago we didn't know if she'd ever crawl or walk!

Karen Ann’s improvements have been really dramatic.  At 17 months old, she is crawling on all fours with her knees underneath her.  She is no longer dragging her legs behind her.  As her muscle tone develops, we continue to believe that she will be walking soon without assistance.  Agree with us in prayer as we continue to believe for Karen Ann’s healing.  She is a happy, joyful girl and the Lord has great plans for her!

Update, February 11, 2013: Keeli played a video for me on Facebook of Karen Ann walking all by herself.  She didn't trip, stumble, wobble, or fall.  Her mother declared her a "full time walker" and, as you can imagine, we were elated.  We replayed the video over and over and over, each time sensing the overwhelming goodness and love of God!

This testimony has shown how the Lord uses this blog to reach people across the nation.  If you ever need prayer, agreement for breakthrough, or a miracle, we would be honored to stand with you.  Email us at somethingmoreinc@gmail.com.

Feather and Fedora

Fall In Love 2012 was a weekend conference in Boone, NC focused on power evangelism.  It certainly was that and more.  Friends traveled from around the country to gain experience in “doing the stuff” that believers were commissioned to carry out. This conference was unlike any I’ve ever experienced.  It wasn’t masses of people coming to listen, take notes, break for lunch, and return for the nightly sessions.  Instead, it was a small group of strangers that connected through their appetite for the supernatural and left as friends.

Rich Brink, a friend we met in Boston, flew from Maine for the weekend.  Rich stirred us with testimonies and shared from John 4 (where Jesus encounters the woman at the well).  He taught practical ways of sharing the Gospel simply and powerfully.

Upon finishing, we were ready to begin the treasure hunt.  This is where we pray in the Spirit and write down every impression we hear from God.  Then, we compare notes, break into teams, and search for the people - the treasures - that the Lord wants to show us.  Often, people get healed, encouraged, or saved.  It was homecoming weekend at Appalachian State so “black and gold” were obvious clues.  We prayed in the Spirit, wrote down our clues and began sharing and connecting the dots.

BJ and Lisa Sullivan, worship leaders and friends from Charlotte, were present.  BJ, sitting down at the front says, “All I saw was a fedora with a feather in it.”

Lisa, standing by the door points out the window and says, “There he goes!” On a skateboard, a man wearing a fedora with a feather in it, shoots by in a blur.  BJ and Richard (our friend and former intern with Immersion Church) try to chase him down but he was too fast.  With many thousands of ASU fans, parents, and students, we knew he would be found again.

We divided into groups of three and began to follow the clues.  I am almost certain that every person with crutches, a cast, or boot was ministered to, prayed for, and some said they began to feel better.  I was with Rich Brink and Josh from Alabama.  Josh attended Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry for two years.  He gave an accurate prophetic word to a friend who serves on the custodial staff.

We then start making our way to the stadium.  Josh and Rich speak a moment to someone on crutches and return right as the fedora and feather walks a few feet right in front of us.  Rich and I catch up with him.  He tells us that he was already found once but was willing to receive anything we had to give him.  We pulled off from the moving crowd and began prophesying to him, encouraging him, and praying for him.  I asked him to stretch out his hands to feel the glory of God.  His arms began to sink under the tangible weight of God’s goodness.

We returned to see that it only took a short time to cover ASU’s campus with a handful of believers.

Sensation

Testimonies are powerful.  So is communion.  This involves both.  Our friend was lactose intolerant and gluten intolerant.  Her diet was very limited.  Keeli and I met in our friends’ apartment for a Holy Spirit Party.  We prepared communion at the end of our meeting and broke bread.  Our friend couldn’t have bread.  What was she supposed to do?  What happened next was an illustration of pure, unadulterated faith. Faith is activated through our action.  Our friend made the decision to take communion with the bread.  Keep in mind that the slightest amount of gluten would throw her digestive system into a state of turmoil for the next few hours.  We prayed, cursed the gluten and lactose intolerance her body had suffered, and released healing from heaven in Jesus’ name.  No lightning bolts lit up the sky.  No thunder was heard overhead.  No gold dust or angel feathers fell.  We just took communion.

Soon after, our friend went to Macado’s, a restaurant in downtown Boone.  She ordered the infamous Cinnamon Sensation.  Imagine a giant cinnamon roll topped with vanilla ice cream with more gluten and lactose than you can handle in a month!  She wasn’t acting out of presumption.  She believed she was healed, received it when she took communion and ate the Cinnamon Sensation without any consequences.

Why is this blog dedicated to testimonies?  The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy (Revelation 19:10).  Prophecy is what is to come.  When we shared this testimony to a group of Ivy League students, a friend from Harvard who suffered from lactose intolerance was instantly healed upon hearing.  What happened in the past builds hope and faith for miracle multiplication in the future.  Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God (Romans 10:17).
